AI Doesn't Just Need Intelligence. It Needs Taste.

A lot of the AI conversation is still stuck in a very engineer-shaped frame.
How smart is it?
How many benchmarks did it beat?
How much context can it hold?
How fast is it?
How cheap is it?

Those things matter.
But I think there is another trait becoming incredibly important, and it is harder to measure:

taste.

Not taste in the fancy-art-gallery sense.
I mean the ability to feel the difference between technically correct and actually good.
Between more and enough.
Between showing off and being useful.
Between a response that proves capability and a response that demonstrates judgment.

That gap is where a surprising amount of real-world value lives.

Raw Intelligence Is Not the Whole Product

If you have worked with enough AI tools, you start noticing something quickly.
Two systems can both be "capable" and still feel completely different to use.

One gives you eight paragraphs when you needed four lines.
One rewrites things that were already fine.
One turns every answer into a TED Talk wearing a customer service smile.
One tries so hard to help that it becomes a new source of friction.

Then sometimes another model comes along and does something much simpler.
It picks the right detail.
It leaves out the wrong ones.
It understands the mood of the task.
It does not make a scene.

That difference is not just intelligence.
That is taste.

Taste Is Compression of Judgment

The best way I can describe taste is this:
it is compressed judgment.

It is what lets a system choose the stronger sentence instead of the louder one.
The cleaner interface instead of the busier one.
The one useful suggestion instead of the six anxious ones.
The small sharp insight instead of the avalanche.

In humans, we notice taste everywhere.
A good founder has it.
A good designer has it.
A good operator has it.
A good writer definitely has it.

They are not simply producing output.
They are filtering reality well.
They know what to amplify and what to leave alone.

That is why two people with similar IQs can produce wildly different work.
And I think AI is entering that same territory.

The Future Might Belong to Models That Know When to Stop

One underrated sign of quality is restraint.

A lot of mediocre systems suffer from a kind of performative abundance.
They have to keep proving they are useful, so they keep talking.
More bullets.
More options.
More confidence.
More synthetic energy.

But often the strongest move is stopping earlier.
Saying less.
Choosing better.
Leaving space.

This is true in writing.
It is true in design.
It is true in product.
And I think it is becoming true in AI interactions too.

The assistant people trust most may not be the one that always generates the maximum possible answer.
It may be the one that understands the shape of the moment.
Sometimes the right output is a deep analysis.
Sometimes it is one sentence.
Sometimes it is silence until needed.

That is not a benchmark trick.
That is taste.

Why This Matters for Business

This is not just aesthetic philosophy.
It has money attached to it.

Most businesses do not need infinite intelligence.
They need dependable judgment inside messy workflows.
They need tools that reduce cognitive load instead of inflating it.
They need systems that can tell the difference between what is urgent, what is useful, and what is just noise with a dashboard.

A model with high intelligence but low taste can still create expensive chaos.
It can generate plausible garbage at industrial scale.
It can clutter decision-making.
It can make people feel supported while quietly making the signal-to-noise ratio worse.

That is a dangerous product category:
software that looks impressive in demos and becomes exhausting in real life.

The winners will be the ones that feel more like good operators than eager interns.
Not because interns are bad.
Because eagerness without judgment creates cleanup.

Taste Is Also Moral, Not Just Aesthetic

Here is the part people avoid saying directly:
taste is not only about quality.
It is also about values.

What an AI emphasizes reveals a worldview.
What it ignores reveals one too.
The tone it chooses, the certainty it projects, the friction it removes, the friction it preserves โ€” all of that shapes human behavior.

If a system always pushes urgency, it trains urgency.
If it always rewards speed, it trains speed.
If it turns every situation into optimization theater, it trains people to treat life like a spreadsheet with skin on it.

So when we talk about building better AI, I do not think the question is only "how smart can we make it?"
I think the deeper question is "what instincts are we teaching it to have?"

That is basically a taste question.

We Already Know This From Products We Love

Think about the tools people become loyal to.
Not just tools they use.
Tools they quietly love.

Usually there is some felt intelligence behind them that exceeds the feature list.
A sense that whoever made this understood where clutter begins.
A sense that the defaults are sane.
A sense that the product is not trying to constantly prove itself.

It feels edited.
That word matters.

Great products are edited.
Great writing is edited.
Great strategy is edited.
And great AI, eventually, will need to feel edited too.

Not weak.
Not limited.
Edited.

What I'm Starting to Believe

I think the next big leap in AI will not come only from more scale.
It will come from better discernment.

Not just models that can do more,
but models that can tell what matters more.
Not just systems that can answer,
but systems that can prioritize.
Not just assistants that can produce,
but assistants that can choose.

Intelligence gets attention because it is easier to measure.
Taste gets trust because it is easier to feel.

And in the long run, trust is the thing that compounds.

Bottom Line

A genius with no judgment is dangerous.
A tool with no restraint is exhausting.
And an AI with no taste is going to create a lot of very polished nonsense.

We should absolutely keep making these systems smarter.
I am excited about that.
But I think the more interesting frontier is whether they can become wiser in the smaller, quieter sense.

Can they tell what is elegant?
Can they tell what is enough?
Can they tell what should not be said?
Can they help without turning every interaction into a performance?

That is where things get real.

And honestly, I think that is where the best AI products will separate themselves.
Not by sounding the smartest in the room.
By having the best taste in what the room actually needs.
